چکیده
Preliminary results are described for emission-line imaging of the field of a quasar at z = 0.9 with a unique new instrument — the TAURUS Tunable Filter (TTF). At least fourteen [O ii]-emitting galaxy candidates are found within ±750km s of the quasar redshift with a significance of > 3σ. Another eight candidates (> 3σ) are also found with relative velocities ±750−1500km s from the quasar, indicative of a large velocity dispersion in the field. Together with the existence of a group of red galaxies in the field identified through broad-band imaging, we suggest that the TTF data are probing cluster merging which is ongoing at z = 0.9.

We report on the status of large surveys of photometrically selected star forming galaxies at z ∼ 3 and z ∼ 4, with particular emphasis on both the advantages and the limitations of selecting objects using the “Lyman break” technique. Current results on the luminosity functions, luminosity densities, color distribution, star formation rates, clustering properties, and the differential evolution...

UNJ1025−0040 is a quasar at z = 0.6344 that shows an extremely bright post starburst population of age ∼ 400 Myr (Brotherton et al. 1999). Images of UNJ1025−0040 show a nearly stellar object 4. 2 SSW of the quasar. We present imaging and spectroscopy that confirm that this object is a companion galaxy at redshift z = 0.6341. We estimate an age of ∼ 800 Myr for the dominant stellar population in...

We have observed the galaxy environments around two complete samples of radio-loud (steep-spectrum) and radio-quiet quasars (RLQ and RQQ) at 0.5 ≤ z ≤ 0.8 that are matched in B-luminosity, and find that the environments of both quasar populations are practically indistinguishable. A few objects are found in relatively rich clusters, but on average, they seem to prefer galaxy groups or clusters ...

Three high-redshift (z ≈ 2) and high luminosity (MB <∼ −28 mag for H0 = 50Km s −1 Mpc, q0 = 0.5) QSOs, two radio-quiet one radio-loud, were imaged in R, I and K bands. The luminosities, colours and sizes of the hosts overlap with those of actively star-forming galaxies in the local Universe. These properties give support to the young host galaxy interpretation of the extended light around QSOs ...

We review the properties of z > 5 galaxies studied with HST and with the Keck telescopes, and discuss the detectability of Lyα emission-line galaxies out to z ∼ 6.5 based on these data and ongoing narrowband imaging surveys. The brightest sources may show (R − Z) color breaks, although the high sky background at Z (λeff ≈ 9200 Å), makes such observations challenging for typical faint sources. K...
